Meet Angus – Certificate III Student With CWBTS

Here at CWBTS, our students inspire us everyday. Each and every student has their own unique story, and all of them work hard to get to where they are. When we heard about the challenging journey Angus has faced, we were amazed. It just goes to show that it is never too late to discover your passion, even after life changing battles.

“The physical and mental components are challenging, yet create an undeniable feeling of excitement. When a job is finished and looks fantastic, as well as being structurally sound, you just seem to feel so proud and stoked on being a part of the build.”

About Angus

Angus is currently completing his carpentry apprenticeship with CWBTS.

It hasn’t been an easy road for Angus. After having a near-death-experience he decided to strive for new goals, in turn finding his passion for carpentry.

“A few years ago I flew to Indonesia for my brother’s wedding. During that time I fell disastrously ill with dengue fever. In intensive care for 2 weeks and dropping down to 40kg, I was on my deathbed. I survived, just. It then took one year to get back to optimal health and fitness. It was then I decided to try and build something of my life.”

After his recovery, Angus became determined to build a restaurant, and one day his future home. Since making that decision, Angus’ “passion for building has thrived and [he is] enjoying every minute.” We are stoked to be a part of this amazing journey, as there is no greater reward than seeing a student discover their passion.

Studying with CWBTS

Throughout his apprenticeship, Angus has grown both his skills as well as his appreciation for a well finished job. Training with CWBTS has many advantages, but for Angus “having them so reliable and relatable” has been the biggest perk.

When it came to choosing CWBTS, Angus’ employer wanted the best skill and knowledge based learning available, and “CWBTS has just that. A friendly and easy going team that are prepared and keen to provide training.”

Our students are always learning on the job, and for Angus that meant learning “everything from the ground up.” This has included “learning the structural element of a three-story house. How its managed, how its safely built. Starting from a green paddock, and into a magnificent town house. Every detail, every measurement is crucial. Amazing.” Currently Angus is putting his skills to use framing the first floor of his current project, as well as outlining and marking for decks and a pool.

So what is Angus’ favourite thing about his course? “The ‘life based’ knowledge I get to learn each week. Building correlates with everything. My favourite thing has got to be the skills you learn. Invaluable.”

At CWBTS, we pride ourselves on the quality of our trainers, and it is our students who can attest to this. For Angus, his trainer was “like a friend with all the answers”, and was only one call away. His trainer always went out of his way to help, and is a “legend.”

Since starting his qualification, Angus’s new skills have already helped him in his day-to-day life. He was able to create a footpath, fence and outdoor area for his rental. Using his bosses tools, Angus worked after hours and now has an area “perfect for a BBQ with mates!”

Words of Wisdom

Angus knows what it’s like to face a major challenge, and come out the other side more motivated than ever. His advice for anyone wanting to study building and construction; “Be ready. Prepared. Excited to learn. Bloody go for it. And you won’t look back.”

Legend! Thanks Angus.
