CAREERS IN BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION: SITE MANAGER

Recently we caught up with Michael, a Simonds Homes Site Manager. Read below to hear about Mike’s pathway to becoming a Site Manager, and his preferred tools of the trade.

Name: Michael, 34 years old
Trade: Site manager
Tool of the trade: The three S’s: site plans, spray paint and spirit level

“I’ve been a site manager for just over a year. I used to build for myself, and before that I was a carpenter. About 90% of supervisors were chippies beforehand, because the chippie gets a grasp of all the other trades.”

“I started my apprenticeship when I was 18. It was a good time, with no strings attached. My advice would be to get to know as many people as you can, then that’s your gang. You can work for yourself and with your mates.”

“At the moment I’m going through the site marking things that need fixing. I make sure the frame level is as per the plan, the walls are in the correct spot, the windows are at the right height, that kind of thing. It’s the easiest thing to prevent things from happening, but they’re sometimes hard to spot. The more you do it, the more you notice.”

“I think the best skill to have for this job is to communicate well, and give respect in order to get it back.”

Legend! Thanks Mike.
